Protecting NSFW Content – A Bit of Advocacy

If you’re following recent news in the NSFW world, some idiots published a rather NSFW game on Itch.io that featured heavily non-consensual content. It was pulled down, but not before it gave justification to credit card companies to clamp down on adult content once again. The name of the game doesn’t matter. The name of the company that published it doesn’t matter. What matters is the censorship that’s growing and making life more difficult for comparatively small outfits like Patreon, Gumroad, OnlyFans, PayPal, Itch.io, and so on.

This isn’t new. It’s been going on for a while. This is just the latest in a long series of deplorable incidents that hurt the rest of us. There aren’t a lot of things we can do as creators, but there’s a lot you can do as content consumers. My favourite approach is to call these credit card companies and complain about their restrictive policies.

You may think this isn’t going to make a difference. Be aware of this: emails are cheap, but humans cost money. Every time you talk to someone at a call center (who are very often external providers), the company gets charged a certain amount (the actual amount depends, but let’s say for the sake of argument that it’s $10 USD). If a THOUSAND of you call to complain, that’s $10k that the credit card company has to fork over. It also increases bottlenecks in answering other, more “legitimate” customers and slows down response time as a whole. These are all stats that credit card companies care a lot about. That’s how you can hurt them.

So if you feel inclined to do something about the rise of credit card company censorship toward adult content creator, all you need to do is call one of them to complain about their censorship of adult content.
