The Bloomin’ Reboot!

Some of you may remember I brought this up in October, and I mentioned it more recently when I released script #478 and announced it was the last script before the reboot.

Some of you said “what reboot?” and it’s only fair I talk about it a bit more here.

When I started BF in 2010, I was doing a weekly 4-panel comic like the kind you’d find in newspaper. While it worked well enough, it was a very rigid format that didn’t let me tell bigger stories. I tried a five-panel/two-rows format, and that was better, but in the end, I had to admit it didn’t give me the result I was looking for. It was brought to my attention much earlier this year that my narrative style would work better with a long-form comic, and I have to admit that yes, I think it would.

So this takes us to the Great Bloomin’ Reboot of 2022. Strip #478 is scheduled to come out at the end of January. After that, I’m switching to a long-form comic. It’s not necessarily going to have more panels (though sometimes it will), but it’s going to be bigger and have more space for readable dialogues. Additionally, it’s going to take things slower and not necessarily try to force a funny situation when the story doesn’t call for it. Sometimes, I’ll just use more space to break down a sexy/funny situation rather than force it into a single page.

It’s not going to make the job of writing the comic easier for me (in fact, I expect I’ll have to step up my game), but I’m very confident it’s going to make the stories sexier and more enjoyable for you.

So what about the characters? What about the stories that have happened in the last 10+ years of the comic? There’s some good news and some bad news. The comic themselves won’t disappear; they’ll be compiled in files that’ll be accessible to all backers (on bloomingfaeries.com), but they’ll be removed from the front page. Only the new pages will be available, and at a slower rate than on Patreon. (Currently, non-backers aren’t going to get to the reboot before October 2022.) You get the exclusivity first.

There’s also some bad news, of sorts: nothing that’s happened before the reboot is considered canon. Some characters may be kept, some may be dropped. Obviously, some characters are definitely untouchable, like Heather, Albert(a), the Sorcerer/Sorceress, Marie, and Baby. Even so, they may not be exactly as you remember them. They’re all going to have a bit more agency and goals. They’re not just going to stand there, wait for faeries to curse them, and have sex with someone/something as a result. This, I hope, will create better and stronger stories, and it’s my hope you’ll stick along for the ride. If you don’t, I’ll completely understand, but I’d ask that you give it a few pages before taking off. I think it’ll be worth your time.

And so, that’s the news. I’m really excited about this change and I can’t wait to start sharing the first few scripts & sketches with you (in January!).

  1. Two problems: the link does not go to the patreon is one. Two is that the post is not set to public.

    1. Sorry about that. Fixed now.

  2. It’s been a blast. Even if our old friends are leaving us, hopefully we can give em a fond farewell and a fine and joyful send-off.

    1. A lot of characters are going to stay, but not all. It’s not going to impact readers of the website for most of 2022, though.

  3. I hope the Sorcerer’s daughter survives the reboot. It’s always good to have a muscle girl.

    1. I was talking about Nadia.

  4. Hopefully Albert’s origin story will be fixed of its one kinda big awkward thing.

  5. Good. The story has been going nowhere for a looong time.

    1. BF never had “a” sorry. It always was a collection of separate long-term plotlines that sometimes intersected then diverged again, and a smattering of short(er) episodes that branched off of them and ran to conclusion.
The problem with this approach is that it is not very suitable to BF’s update schedule, so moving to a more focused format makes sense.

  6. I was hoping to find out how my namesake was doing under Goldie’s tutelage. Oh well…
Best of luck with the new direction, Jaycee!
